The Different Types Of SEO Practiced By Digital Marketers

SEO can be mastered only with practice, by implementing what you read. That the algorithms on which Google and other search engines work are not public makes mastering SEO more difficult. Although all these years of trial and error have given us a pretty good idea about the various ranking factors and also, now we have scores of tools to help us, implementing them and becoming a pro in SEO is still not an easy task. So, let’s take one step at a time. Let us start with the types of SEO practices.

Different Types Of SEO Practices

SEO techniques practiced by digital marketers can be broadly classified into two categories:
1. On-Page SEO
2. Off-Page SEO
So, what do they mean? They mean exactly as the terms suggest. Let us look into them in details:

Types Of SEO: On-Page SEO

On-Page SEO refers to all the activities carried out on the page that is to be published to optimize it in a manner that Google or any other search engine ranks it higher in the SERP.

As I mentioned in my previous post on what is SEO, there are hundreds of ranking factors that Google’s algorithm considers, many of which comes under the purview of On-Page SEO. Some of these are as under:
1. URL Structure
2. Title of the Page
3. Keyword Density
4. Meta Description
5. Image Optimization
6. Secondary Keywords
7. Content Optimization
8. Meta Tags
9. Alt Text
10. Interlinking
11. H2, H3, H4, H5, H6 Tags, etc.

Types Of SEO: Off-Page SEO

Off-Page SEO refers to various practices that are carried out outside the page in order to promote it and its content so that search engines understand that the particular page is useful for the users and improve its rank.
Some aspects of Off-Page SEO are as under:
1. Likes and Shares
3. Guest Blogs
4. Backlinks, etc.

In addition to these two types of SEO, from the ethical point of view as well as legitimacy, there are two other types of SEO. These are:
1. White Hat SEO
2. Black Hat SEO

Let us look into them in details:

White Hat SEO

White Hat SEO refers to all the SEO practices that are legitimate and in line with the SEO guidelines of search engines. Like everything else, the algorithms of search engines too have many loopholes and gaps. White Hat SEO do not take advantage of these loopholes.

Of course, White Hat SEO takes time to show results, to improve ranking in search engines. It takes more time, energy and research but it is still preferable and is recommended by top SEO experts, for long term gains.

It is to be noted that writing quality articles that provides relevant information is part of White Hat SEO.

Black Hat SEO

This is the exact opposite of White Hat SEO. This means this type of SEO practices take advantage of the loopholes in search engines’ algorithms and get the content ranked in the SERP. It is unethical and illegitimate. Many sites practice this type of SEO and improve their visibility faster. However, if Google identifies its practice, the websites are likely to be penalized. Using huge number of keywords (keyword stuffing) or unrelated keywords are examples of Black Hat SEO practice.

There is also another type of SEO called the Grey Hat SEO which falls in between the White Hat SEO and Black Hat SEO. Still, practicing it is risky and is not recommended at all.
